International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025
The UN General Assembly has declared 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation and 21st March as International Glacier Day each year starting from 2025. NVE wishes to observe this special year. This page will hold updated information on activities related to this special occasion.
NVE participation in the organisation of this year
The International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation is co-ordinated by UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). NVE is a partner and is involved in several of the task forces and in the advisory board. This web page gives more information about the year: 2025 International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation.
Global Glacier Casualty List
Global Glacier Casualty List is a collection of stories about glaciers that have recently melted or are in the process of disappearing. NVE has contributed a story about Breifonn and Juvfonne.

Seminar 20 March 2025

Exhibition Norwegian Mountain Center, Lom
The Norwegian Mountain Center in Lom is creating an exhibition in collaboration with NVE opening on 5 June. The exhibition aims to share knowledge about the current state of glaciers, both in Norway and around the world. Through interviews, photos, and videos, the exhibition will explore how different communities are adapting to the changes taking place.

Mountain sports evening 22 January, 2025: Glacier evening with DNT Fjellsport Oslo and NVE - celebrating glacier year 2025
DNT fjellsport Oslo and NVE invite you to a glacier evening on 22nd January with glaciers as the theme. There will be two talks: one from NVE by Liss Andreassen and Hallgeir Elvehøy who will talk about glacier measurements in a historical perspective, and one from DNT’s Sven Bjørne Larsen who will talk about the use of glaciers in the past two hundred years.
